Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell resigns over ‘plebgate’
Andrew Mitchell has quit as Chief Whip after coming under fire for allegedly calling police officers at Downing Street “plebs”.
Mitchell apologised for his conduct but denied using the word in the exchange last month.
The Labour Party, the Police Federation as well as the Daily Telegraph were just some of those calling for the minister’s resignation as the storm brewed around him.
In Parliament there were angry clashes over the Chief Whip on Wednesday.
PM David Cameron has accepted his resignation.

As a driver and a cyclist I notice that when a Police Officer wants to speak to me in a car the approach is generally “excuse me sir” but when on a bike the call is generally “Oi You” The reported exchange must have been initiated by the Police Officer, saying something to direct Andrew Mitchell not to use the road and main gates. This part of the conversation has never been reported, and I just wonder what triggered the brusque, reported response.
